Teaching people, not just content
We had a very full and thoughtful day of learning on our Professional Development Day at Bridge on Friday, September 20th, 2024.
We started the day with two team-building/ice-breaker activities in the gym. They involved hula hoops, rock/paper/scissors and team work. We are excited to try these activities with our students as they work together to solve problems and burn off some energy!
We then spent the morning working with Karla Gamble, one of our District Teacher Consultants. She helped us think about how to meaningfully weave the First Peoples' Principles of Learning into our daily routines and lessons. We discussed how important the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of our students and community is because we are teaching people, not just content. We also considered these two questions and discussed how to help engage students in their learning:
1. Do your students want to learn?
2. Do your students want to learn from you?
After our lunch break we were lucky to work with Jonathan Tang, another Teacher Consultant in the District. Jonathan is passionate about ADST (applied design, skills and technology) and after reviewing our new award-winning district website for staff and the teaching resources found within it, he brought out some special resources for us to try out. Teachers and staff had time to explore the Indy robots, coding materials and more.
We ended the day discussing our school communication systems and how we can all "Be a Bridge" for our students and families.
