Updated Focus for 2025/26

School Learning Focus for the 2025/26 school year

This year we will look deeper into how students’ sense of belonging and identity impacts them as a learner, specifically in numeracy.

Evidence-Informed Rationale (WHY)

The students were asked: Do you like math?

On the survey of intermediate students:

45% - yes

20% - no

34% - unsure

See the Student Math Survey picture.

Wonders:

Do students engage to their full potential when they do not enjoy the subject?

How can we change student’s perception of math?

Baseline Data

The baseline data comes from the Learning Updates for this year. See Baseline Data picture.

Priority Learners

Priority learners include designated student and English Language Learners in levels one and two. See Priority Learners picture.

Action Statement (HOW)

This year we will engage in Professional Development and collaboration around mathematics and numeracy. This will include:

  • Learning with other schools
  • Sessions with district consultants – Shaheen Musani (Numeracy and assessment) and Jonathan Tang (Numeracy)
  • Collaboration with similar grade colleagues
  • Collaboration with McRoberts math teachers and upper intermediate teachers from other feeder schools
  • Exploration of the tools we already have and search out what we discover we need

Intended Impact (SO WHAT)

Teachers have noticed that students’ engagement in math impacts their performance.  Teachers observed students’ engagement increasing when they are enjoying math. Students report they enjoy math the most when they get to collaborate, play games, feel supported or challenged and have visual, creative or real-life situations. We want to increase engagement through enjoyment to have the students see themselves as consistently as math learners.

Evidence of Impact (HOW WE WILL KNOW)

Student and staff will be asked to share about the learning journey. There is information from the beginning of the year, and we will compare it to information that is gathered later in the year. We may also see a change in Learning Updates/Summaries and FSA data.

Alignment Statement

Strategic Priority 1: Success for all learners

Improve numeracy outcomes for all learners to support success in all areas of the kindergarten to Grade 7 curriculum
